It's about time that a transgender person was elected to the San Francisco Board of Education.

First of all, we were impressed with the three leading candidates for the BART District 8 seat. Janice Li, Jonathan Lyens, and Melanie Nutter all told us about important changes they believe will improve the regional transit system.

City College of San Francisco is improving and headed in the right direction. We're endorsing incumbents Thea Selby and John Rizzo, and newcomer Victor Olivieri, Ph.D. All are straight allies.

This November's Board of Supervisors elections will usher in at least three new members, as veteran Supervisors Jane Kim in District 6 and Malia Cohen in District 10 are termed out of office and District 4 Supervisor Katy Tang decided not to run.

We reject the criticism leveled at the Bay Area Reporter over our decision to publish an opinion piece last week that discussed a timely, topical issue about a mistake, an apology, and anger by the transgender community.

San Francisco school board candidate Josephine Zhao did the right thing when she announced Monday that she was exiting the race. In fact, had she not done so, this editorial would have called on her to withdraw.
