When the official nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards were announced last week, the Academy of Friends took the opportunity to throw a splashy party at Bubbles in North Beach for friends and supporters. Celebrants, including Elizabeth Loeffler, Joel Goodrich, Mark Calvano, B.J. Stiles , Scott Weiner, Todd Ferrell, and John Newmeyer, gathered to enjoy libations and gossip about the nominees in this intimate Champagne club with exposed brick walls and a very clubby atmosphere, featuring a large-screen projection promoting the Academy of Friends party on March 5.  This is the largest and, by most reports, the most lavish Academy Awards party outside of Hollywood, and has raised literally millions of dollars for AIDS-related charities over its 25-year history. It is truly a San Francisco legend, having started in the living room of Kyle Ozier , a creative movie fan, with a small group of philanthropic friends. Don't miss Rubies & Rhinestones, The Glitz and Glamour of American Film, this year's celebration at the Concourse Exhibition Center on March 5, starting at 5 p.m. Rumor has it that Comcast has engaged a well-known media couple who will be on the red carpet greeting guests and reporting on the fashions as they appear. Our suggestions? Ladies, long gowns and glamorous color. Gentlemen, black tie with a colorful but traditional twist!

It's hard to imagine that the political campaign season has already begun, but it has! Last Saturday we joined the throng at the stunning home of City Treasurer Jose Cisneros and his handsome husband Mark Kelleher to kick off the reelection campaign of Supervisor Bevan Dufty. Put the rumors to bed now; we will be actively supporting the reelection of this skillful and compassionate public servant. Elected public office is not in our immediate future. District 8 voters and other supporters were out in force, including 92.7FM's Greg Sherrell and Fernando Ventura , Pink magazine's David Cohen , Wayne Friday, Jim Rivaldo, and a lovely cross-section of the community.

Later that night, Deco Lounge hosted Empress Susie Wong 's Chinese New Year Party and fundraiser for the Tenderloin Tessie Holiday Dinners, and what a crowd was assembled! The Leather community was well-represented by the likes of Mama, Don Ho Tse , Robert Larabee , Keith Truitt, and Andy Rose; the Ducal Court by Regent Grand Duke Rob Esmonde , Regent Grand Duchess Colette LeGrande , and Grand Duchess Davida ; and the Imperial Court by Emperors Jacques Michaels and John Carrillo , Reigning Empress Tiger Lily , Empresses Remy Martin , Alexis Miranda , China Silk

, and Sheba!, and Larry Cook and Keith and Gladys Bumps . The charming Paul Scates and the disarming Victoria Secret kept everyone happy at this beautifully appointed bar. The recently announced candidates for Emperor and Empress this year were there as well, Jason Ladd and Galilea . Watch for an inundation of colorful campaign activities as the weeks ensue. Public voting is on Saturday, February 18, at Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro and in front of Under One Roof in the Tenderloin. Of course, Imperial Coronation is the following Saturday at the Gift Center, requiring another serious contemplation of wardrobe. Ladies: regal, full-length gowns and lots of jewelry; gentleman: suits, uniforms, dress leather, or black tie with proper white gloves!

Dirty fun

Even later that night, we discovered that Dirty, a relatively new monthly club at The Stud, has taken off wonderfully and was packed with fun-loving party people. Ross Dierking and Jose were celebrating their three-year anniversary, so many of their friends were among the dancing crowd at this venerable and friendly club. We ended the evening, or should we say morning, at Metropolis, where we were greeted by Gus Bean himself and treated to some of the best music and lights in town.

We hope to see you at the elegant and festive EqualityCalifornia Dinner and Awards Gala at City Hall this Saturday night. Co-Chairs Chris Carnes, Mariah Hanson, and Xavier Barrera promise you a lavish celebration in the historic building where the biased restriction on same-sex marriage was temporarily lifted just a couple of years ago, to the delight of thousands of LGBT couples. Mayor Gavin Newsom will be on hand to present the Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon Marriage Equality Award to Assemblyman Mark Leno; and additional awards will be given to the writer and director of the movie Transamerica, Duncan Tucker, and to the United Farm Workers of America, represented by the granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, Christine Chavez. We'll be co-hosting the VIP Party afterwards with Ggreg Taylor on the Mayor's Balcony, so join us! A parting word of fashion advice for this event: Ladies, sparkling cocktail dresses or elegant pants outfits; gentlemen, sleek suits or tuxes with understated details!
