Members of Compton’s x Coalition, including, from left, Santana Tapia, Megan Roher, Dr. Dreame, Miss Billie Cooper, Cal Lerchi, and Gemma Girón, stood outside the site of the former Gene Compton’s Cafeteria at 111 Taylor Street after banners were dropped Sunday, May 18, by Traction SF seeking to “liberate” the site, which currently is a halfway house for formerly incarcerated people operated by GEO Group. As the Bay Area Reporter previously reported, supporters of the historic site of a 1966 riot by transgender people protesting police harassment want GEO Group’s contract to be terminated. The San Francisco Board of Appeals earlier this month voted to grant jurisdiction to hear the coalition’s appeal of a planning department zoning determination. A hearing on that matter is set for June 11 at 5 p.m. at San Francisco City Hall.
