October 16, 1943 – December 1, 2024
Dr. Kathleen "Kay" Taylor, an obstetrician and gynecologist who founded Bay Area women's clinics and the non-governmental organization Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer (PINCC), died December 1, 2024, at home in Oakland. She was 81.
Championing women's access to respectful health care since her student activist years at UC Davis Medical School, Kay started Womankind clinic and volunteered at Lyon Martin Women's Health Services (now Lyon Martin Community Health) before her career at Kaiser Hospital in Fremont. She successfully lobbied Kaiser Northern California to extend employee health benefits to same-sex partners.
As PINCC's director, Kay brought volunteer doctors and equipment to Central America, India, and Africa, screening and treating over 3,000 women, and training local clinicians to continue the fight against cervical cancer. A fan of Bay Area Women's Philharmonic, Opera Parallèle, Santa Fe Opera, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Kay was a world traveler, amateur painter, gardener, gourmet cook, oenophile, dancer, singer, excellent hostess, and bon vivant. She created her own wedding cake when she and her partner of 35 years could finally legally marry. Survivors include her wife, Pat Sax, and many loving friends and family members. A celebration of life will be held at Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Avenue, Piedmont, CA, on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
