Whip up some tasty dishes while supporting LGBT teen education with the new Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence's cookbook fundraiser for The Point Foundation.
Created by Sister Penny Costal, a 25-year member of the drag nun philanthropic nonprofit, the book, titled Sisters, Saints and Scholars, will include favorite recipes from the drag nun members of the nonprofit widely known for hosting their annual Easter celebrations. The book will feature photos by local nightlife and community photographer Gooch.
The beneficiary is close to the main organizer. As Sister Penny Costal wrote on the fundraiser's GoFundMe page, "After many years of volunteer community health service with The Sisters, I decided to go back to university to pursue a degree to do more for our LGBTQ community. I could not have done it without Point Foundation.
"After a lengthy and rigorous process, I was selected to be a 2018 Point Foundation Scholar. We are required to complete a community service project every academic year as a condition of the scholarship. I chose to compile a cookbook of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence's favorite recipes and use it as a fundraiser for Point Foundation."
For $30, donors receive the cookbook, with more personalized versions for larger donations. The project's $10,000 goal was at nearly $1400 as of May 4.
The Point Foundation is the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit. Point promotes change through scholarship funding, mentorship, leadership development, and community service training. The organization helps LGBTQ students to achieve their total academic and leadership potential — despite the obstacles often put before them — to make a significant impact on society.
Nearly one-third of LGBTQ students drop out of high school to escape the violence, harassment, and isolation they face there. As a result, many LGBTQ students say they are not planning to pursue opportunities for higher education. The Foundation helps students achieve goals of higher education.
