John Piper moved from Arkansas to the West Coast while serving in the Navy in the 1950s. John's career as an electrician brought him to Washington, Oregon, and northern California, and then, in the mid-1960s, he settled in San Francisco, where he quickly adapted to this vibrant and eclectic city.

John was devoted to his Yorkies, walking them to Duboce Park several times a day for many years. He seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood, and everyone seemed to know him. He was also well known for his wonderful sidewalk sales. Friends were always welcome to stop by his house on Noe Street, and would very often be treated to John's home cookin'. John had a great love of country music, acquired in his childhood, and he attended the concerts of his favorite artists whenever they were in town.

John died peacefully at home, and is survived by his life partner, Eddie Palaz; by his sister, Helen Willis, of Oklahoma; by many nieces and nephews, and by the very many friends who loved him dearly. John will be missed, but he will always be in our hearts.
