July 1, 1953 - December 8, 2010

On December 8, Malcolm Squyres finally lost his approximately 25-year battle against AIDS. Born in Houston, Texas, he moved to San Francisco to work for Crocker Bank but soon brought his ebullient personality to the Castro, where he became a longtime bartender and manager at Badlands and The Phoenix from the late 80s to the mid-90s.

Following the death of his partner James Eves, Malcolm embarked on a new career in ticket services, first at the San Francisco Ballet, and then, since 2002, with the San Francisco Opera box office. Here he was surrounded by a loving family of coworkers who became the invaluable support system that helped him through his numerous hospitalizations, surgeries, and periods of recuperation over the past several years. To quote his great friend and coworker Ruth: "Malcolm was the bravest and most generous person I've ever known."
