Michael H. Smith passed away peacefully at his home in Sacramento on April 20 at the age of 55. His beloved husband and life-partner Bret Sotkiewicz, whom he was married to on September 13, 2008, was with him at the time. They had lived in San Francisco until 2001.

Born in Gloversville, New York on November 18, 1954, he is survived by his father Harold Smith and his sister Dale Dayton, both of New York. Michael was preceded in death by his mother Hattie and his sisters Nancy Pierce and Shirley Wintermute.

Michael served as the Facilities and Meetings Manager with the California Medical Association for 24 years. He will be remembered for his kind heart, good-natured soul, quick wit and his color-coordinated Hawaiian shirts and Hush Puppies at the large meetings that he planned.

His interests included the love of travel. He was passionate about Broadway and Disney musicals, a voracious reader and he adored his family and pets. He also worked tirelessly on renovating his home with his husband, creating a comfortable haven to share their lives for 16 years.

Memorial services are scheduled for Thursday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Sacramento.

Donations may be made to Breaking Barriers in Sacramento (www.breakingbarriers.org), a charity that he and his husband have been a part of for many years.
