1954 " 2009

San Francisco attorney Charles (Chuck) Stolpe passed away suddenly in his home on Lyon Street, Saturday, March 7, 2009.  He was 55.

Chuck had many friends and colleagues in the Bay Area, as well as a large and supportive family in New Mexico and Southern California. He was born in a naval hospital in San Diego during the height of the Korean War. His father, a pilot, was stationed on an aircraft carrier and was notified of his birth by way of secret radio code.

Chuck was truly a Renaissance man, equally at ease under the hood of his beloved 1986 Buick as he was in his kitchen creating his signature lemon meringue pie. Chuck spent much of his early law career as a criminal attorney.

Later, he worked tirelessly in San Francisco and San Mateo County Public Defenders Offices, providing advocacy and representation to a host of needy clients. Upon hearing of his untimely parting, Chuck's office phone logged many calls from former clients, some still incarcerated, sending their condolences.

Per his wishes, his remains will be interred in the San Francisco Columbarium with a memorial service to be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
