After a one-year battle with lung cancer, Robert Reynaud Hutchinson, or Hutch, as he was known to his friends, passed away peacefully at the home of longtime friend John Williams while n the company of husband Robert Lescoe.
Born in Denham Springs, Louisiana, Hutch moved to San Francisco immediately after graduating high school in the mid-50s, and promptly enrolled in the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design. He was one of the preeminent West Coast designers involved in creating what became known worldwide as the California Style. Many of his projects were featured in Architectural Digest. Not content to rest on his laurels, he continually evolved and created up until months before his death.
Beloved by his friends for his fierce loyalty, unyielding attention to detail, and cantankerous demeanor, his absence is sorely felt.
His never-ending curiosity took him to far-flung destinations all around the globe, but ultimately he received the most peace and tranquility from his 100 acres in Sonoma County. This will be the final resting place for his ashes, and where his friends will gather for a remembrance of his life in May.
Hutch is survived by his husband Robert Lescoe, sisters Lynne Graner and Margie Jones, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Contributions in Hutch's name may be made to Project Open Hand, or, since Hutch was such an avid gardener, to Friends of the Urban Forest.
