November 19, 1926 – August 31, 2007

Born in Wichita, and raised in Salinas, Kansas, David joined the Navy towards the end of World War II. He first saw and fell in love with San Francisco after being shipped back home from the South Pacific. He moved here in 1947 upon discharge from the Navy.

He worked at Bank of America at Powell and Market streets, where he had many colorful characters for customers.

His tender years equipped him with a myriad of stories that could fill a textbook about an earlier gay San Francisco, with chapters about nights at the Black Cat, and adventures in Union Square and North Beach.

He followed his love to Missouri, where he began a civil service career at Fort Leonard Wood, working for the Army as a civilian. He was later transferred to South Korea, Louisville, KY, Washington D.C., and then back to his beloved San Francisco, where he retired in 1979.

In retirement, he became a lovable fixture in the Castro, residing for 29 years on Beaver St. He leaves behind a loving extended family, and will be sorely missed.

A memorial cocktail party (what else?) will be held in early October. Contact Jerry Lasley at (415) 595-4584 for details.

David was an animal lover, so memorial contributions can be sent to the SF SPCA in his name. Goodnight, sweet dreams, good generous and faithful friend.
