March 19, 1949 - November 25, 2007
Ernest "Sonny" Padilla, well known musician, songwriter, and music producer, passed peacefully at his home in San Francisco November 25. His longtime partner, Dennis Piper, was at his side when he left this earth to begin his next voyage. Sonny was 58 years old. His health had been declining over the past year, and he ultimately succumbed to congestive heart failure. Known affectionately as Sonny by his friends and associates, his work in the music industry is widely acclaimed.
Born in Northern California in 1949, he lived much of his life in San Francisco, but also resided in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Australia. In the mid 1980s, Sonny formed Me Undo Productions/Uno Records through which he recorded and produced music. He recently wrote and produced the hit single, "Put Some Funk in Your Shoes," featuring Jeanie Tracy and Larry Batiste. This most recent single rose to the top 20 on Billboard magazine. Suspecting his health was failing, just a few weeks ago, Sonny was able to complete his most recent album, Best Of In Betwee,. which is planned for a future release.
Through his four-decade career, he worked with Janis Joplin, Cyndi Lauper, Sylvester, Prince, Patti LaBelle, John Kander, and Olivia Newton-John, among others.
Sonny used his talents to help produce fundraising events in the early years of the struggle against HIV/AIDS, and donated proceeds from his music to a variety of AIDS charities. Earlier this year, in recognition of his work and contribution to the music industry, Sonny was honored in receiving Lifetime Membership from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (The Grammys).
Besides his partner, he also leaves behind a large circle of close friends and associates. The industry has truly lost a few musical notes with Sonny's passing. A celebration of Sonny's life will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Church, 100 Diamond Street, San Francisco on Saturday, December 15 at 1 p.m.
