Praise for new SFPD captain
What a wonderful and wonderfully written story about Captain Christopher Del Gandio ["SFPD gay Captain Del Gandio makes history," January 20]. He is the type of San Francisco Police officer — gay or straight — that you would want to show up if you were in trouble. Moving to San Francisco, rising through the ranks, and attaining the esteemed position of captain is impressive — all as an out gay man.
What makes me sad is that he works out of Central Station in my neighborhood, and that he could have been one of the officers attempting to get a meal at a new restaurant a couple of blocks from the station, but instead were humiliated and asked to leave. It breaks my heart that in San Francisco, and especially in North Beach, that such disrespect for our people in uniform exists. It may not have been Capitan Del Gandio, but after reading your profile of him, just the idea that it could have been him, or an officer just like him, disgusts me.
I will, and my friends will and most of my neighbors on Russian Hill will never patronize Hilda & Jesse. Their apology was shallow and only felt necessary to save their business.
Keep up the good writing.
