Over $5,000 worth of equipment was stolen from Daddy's Barbershop, 4102 19th Street (near Castro) when burglars smashed a front window after the shop closed on Saturday night, April 28, the owner said.

Owner Jessie Vanciel said that a neighbor notified the manager early Sunday morning. The manager, who normally doesn't work Sundays, called in the incident at 7 a.m. and police arrived at about 11:30 a.m. to take a report, according to a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson.

The burglars took equipment, including the shop's point-of-sale system, said Vanciel, a gay man.

Because the window is reinforced with metal wire, it probably did not make a loud noise when it was kicked in, he said.

Daddy's, which recently opened another shop in Palm Springs, has been at its current location for nine years. It had another burglary six years ago.

Vanciel said his business continues to do well.

"The neighborhood has changed," he said, and a number of the newer residents are bringing their children in for haircuts.

"We're known for keeping up with the latest styles and products," he added.
