Rabbis Mychal Copeland, at microphone, and Sydney Mintz conducted a renewal of marriage vows at Congregation Sha'ar Zahav in San Francisco Sunday, September 15, for the five couples standing in the background. The event was the synagogue and other Jewish groups' kickoff for Jews for the Freedom to Marry and the campaign to pass California Proposition 3 on the November ballot. Prop 3 would remove language banning same-sex marriage from the state constitution. LGBTQ leaders put the constitutional amendment on the ballot over fears that a conservative U.S. Supreme Court might overturn its 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
