San Francisco Mayor London Breed addressed a gathering in Jane Warner Plaza in the Castro Sunday, May 19, as part of the activities celebrating Harvey Milk Day. The day of special significance in California is officially observed on May 22, Milk's birthday. Community leaders and others held a procession from Milk's old camera store to the public parklet that was led by the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the city's official band. Milk and then-mayor George Moscone were assassinated November 27, 1978 by disgruntled former supervisor Dan White. Milk was the first openly gay man elected to office in the city and state when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.
