A shooting in the parking lot of Market Street Safeway in the Castro left two people injured late Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting took place during a fight involving "a large group of juveniles," according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle. The young people were reportedly fighting in the store's parking lot at 2020 Market Street at 4:50 p.m. when the victim was shot in the leg. The victim was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center for treatment.
San Francisco Police Department investigations commander Raj Vaswani posted about the incident on Twitter shortly after it occurred. He had no further information.
"Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old male and 85-year-old female victim suffering from gunshot wounds," reported Officer Salar Naderi, public information officer for the San Francisco Police Department.
"During the fight, one of the participants of the fight produced a gun and fired into the crowd that was fighting," Naderi further stated. The 85-year-old victim was not involved in the fight.
The victims were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center for treatment.
According to the SFPD's daily recap released February 16, the younger victim was a 21-year-old Black male. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Mandelman stated he was continuing to seek information.
"My office is following up to learn more," gay District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman posted on Twitter February 15.
Mandelman did not return a text message seeking comment.
Safeway media personnel at the company's Pleasanton headquarters did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
