Gay District 8 Supervisor Jeff Sheehy places a trash item into a new Bigbelly container that he, Mayor Mark Farrell, and other city officials had installed last week in the Castro. The containers, which have automatic compacters inside allowing them to hold five times more waste, are outfitted with wireless, automated real-time technology that immediately alerts collectors when they are full. Farrell and the city's Fix-It Team installed five of the containers in the Castro; five more will be added each in central Market, Civic Center, and the Tenderloin neighborhoods. The Castro containers are adorned with the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District's logo - the organization partnered with the city on the project.
