A man was arrested near the Castro Theatre last weekend for causing a disturbance then later threatening a security guard with a knife, authorities said.
Adam Zepeda Jr., 27, of Manteca, was arrested January 20 and booked on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, threats, and possession of a switchblade.
"Officers from Mission Station responded to the 400 block of Castro Street regarding an intoxicated person," said Officer Adam Lobsinger, San Francisco Police Department spokesman in an email response to the Bay Area Reporter. "When confronted by security guards about causing a disturbance, Zepeda Jr. threatened security guards with a knife."
Zepeda Jr. remains in county jail, according to a spokesperson for the San Francisco Sheriff's Department. His bail is set at $1.1 million. Police would not say if the incident occurred inside or outside the Castro Theatre or if the security guard was a Castro Theatre employee. Police said the guard was private security.
Lobsinger said the incident remained under investigation.
Zepeda Jr.'s sister, 29-year-old Amber Zepeda, an Oakland resident, was cited and released at the scene for resisting and obstructing a police officer, Lobsinger added.
On Facebook, Patrick Henry, former owner of the now-closed Super Star Video in the Castro district, said he drove by the theater at the time of the incident.
"Driving down Castro at 9pm = 6 or more Police cars and Officers racing into the Castro Theatre (no ambulances, however). Word-of-mouth suggested a "knife-fight up in the Balcony"??? Anyone else hear about this?" read Henry's Facebook post, which had no comments.
The theater was showing "Who's Laughing Now: An evening with Bruce Campbell" and "Evil Dead II," which started at 8 p.m. as part of Sketchfest SF.
The Castro Theatre and Henry have not responded to requests for comment from the B.A.R. The San Francisco District Attorney's office has not responded to an inquiry regarding the date of Zepeda Jr.'s arraignment. A spokesperson for the sheriff's department said Zepeda Jr. did not have a court date scheduled.
