The Haight Street Arts Center has unveiled an art display commissioned by Forward Together to acknowledge Trans Day of Resilience and people can view the outdoor gallery exhibit beginning Friday, November 20.

The arts center reopened November 12, stated Kelly Harris, a queer-identified woman who is the executive director.

Trans Day of Resilience is an expansion of Trans Day of Remembrance, an annual memorial for trans people killed in the epidemic of violence, especially against Black trans women. It presents an opportunity to turn mourning into radical imagining, a news release noted.

The exhibition, entitled "Radical Imagining: Trans Resilience is Powerful," was created by Forward Together, a Bay Area-based nonprofit, and Micah Bazant, the organization's artist in residence. Together, they have nurtured the project for the past seven years. Both the Audre Lorde Project and BreakOUT played critical roles in founding and shaping the themes and content of the project, and many of the pieces created from 2015-2020 were done in collaboration with trans justice organizations across the country, the release noted.

"HSAC is honored to host this engaging work that highlights the resilience, power, and strength of trans communities of color," Harris stated. "Our garden gallery will serve as a place for empowerment, community building, and healing for the trans community and allies."

The artists featured in the exhibition are: Amir Khadar, Art Twink, Asia-Vinae Jazzreal Parker, Bishakh Som, Colin Laurel, Ebin Lee, Kosmo X Parker, Fi Hernandez, Glori Tuitt, Hinter Ashleigh Shackelford, Kah Yangni, Mojuicy, and Rommy Sobrado-Torrico.

HSAC is located at 215 Haight Street. People can view the exhibition Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The exhibition will be up through January 31.

HSAC promotes advancement of poster art and artists to enable poster/graphic art and artists to thrive and continue to enrich American popular culture. Drawing upon the influence of San Francisco's counterculture history, the art center provides educational and engaging influences through art, music, exhibitions, and public programs to create community, encourage personal exploration, and inspire action toward positive cultural change.
