In the fourth edition of the Bay Area Reporter's monthly online chats celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication, veteran writers John F. Karr and Cornelius Washington will discuss the history of sexuality in the publication.

The chat takes place Thursday, August 5, at 6pm PT, on the B.A.R.'s Facebook page and YouTube channel. The event is free, and will later be archived. See the links below.

From porn reviews to escort ads and strip club features, the Bay Area Reporter has never been shy about sharing information on sexuality. Among the topics of discussion are the hedonistic days of the 1970s, safe sex through the AIDS pandemic, and the rise and fall of the notorious escort ads in the newspaper. Arts & Nightlife Editor Jim Provenzano moderates.

John F. Karr was the inaugural editor of the Bay Area Reporter's Arts section, and contributed his popular Karrnal Knowledge column of porn reviews for 40 years. Along the way he's been a guest lecturer at San Francisco State University's Human Sexualities classes, crafted scores of sound designs for scores of local semi- and professional theatres, co-founded and co-hosted the sex parties SF Jacks for 35 years, and had an extensive career at American Conservatory Theatre as Wardrobe Supervisor and dresser to the stars.

Cornelius Washington was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended the prestigious New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, the first student to graduate with a double degree in art and dance. He went on to become a dancer and choreographer, appearing in music videos and commercials for major corporations.

Washington became a photojournalist/columnist for numerous magazines that covered the LGBTQ community and beyond, with subjects such as Annie Leibovitz, RuPaul and Peter Beard.

A Hurricane Katrina survivor, Cornelius arrived in San Francisco in late 2005, becoming a freelance photojournalist with The Bay Area Reporter, covering icons such as Sen. Barney Frank, Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, Joe D'Allesandro, as well as top adult film stars who performed at the legendary Nob Hill Theatre.

Jim Provenzano is the Arts & Nightlife Editor for the Bay Area Reporter, and has been an editor and freelancer for the B.A.R. and numerous other LGBT media for three decades. He is also the author of seven gay fiction novels, several plays and a short story collection.

The chat will include a (slightly censored) slideshow of articles and ads through the B.A.R.'s five decades.
