Senator Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination Wednesday, April 8, according to multiple media outlets.

The decision by the independent senator from Vermont effectively cedes the party's nomination to former vice president Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, won the California primary in March, but had struggled and saw his delegate lead disappear as Biden went on to win most of the other primaries that month.

According to Politico, Sanders made the announcement during an all-staff conference call.
