A resolution prepared by the commission recognized Damiani, a lesbian, for her leadership positions with Bay Area Career Women, the Golden Gate Business Association, and service on the boards of the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee and the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. Most readers likely know Damiani as a longtime staff member to gay former state Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). She served as his field representative when he was in the state Assembly, and as a district representative when he was in the Senate. Before that she was an aide for former Assemblyman Kevin Shelley, spending a total of 15 and a half years working in the Legislature. Damiani said she was "very touched" by the honor.
