A car drove into 2301 Market Street in the Castro — the building where a Fitness SF branch is located — early September 11, according to San Francisco Police and multiple social media posts.
"On 9/11/2020 at approximately 1:55 a.m., Mission Station officers responded to Market Street and Noe Street regarding a vehicle collision causing property damage," San Francisco Police Department spokeswoman Officer Tiffany Hang stated to the Bay Area Reporter. "There were no injuries as a result of the collision. This collision is part of a CHP investigation."
Updated: 9/15/20: California Highway Patrol spokesman Mark Andrews told the Bay Area Reporter that Eric Nossess, 26, of San Francisco, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony evasion, hit-and-run, driving without a license, and an outstanding felony of which nature Andrews did not know, but which had been issued by a San Francisco court.
Andrews said that the driver of the car evaded a traffic stop on city streets, went onto the freeway, and returned to the street before crashing into 2301 Market Street.
In a Facebook post including a video, user Atom Edwards stated that "the driver apparently got out ... and was captured by the police."
Facebook user Daniel Joseph posted a photo and wrote, "When you cannot take the gyms being closed anymore and cannot wait until Monday, I am surprised this did not happen sooner."
The crash occurred hours after Mayor London Breed announced that indoor gyms in San Francisco will be allowed to reopen at limited capacity starting September 14.
The building, located at Noe and Market streets, contains Weaver's Coffee & Tea, which temporarily closed some weeks ago due to the pandemic.
Fitness SF did not respond to a request for comment.
