The group One Struggle, One Fight is encouraging people to help plan a march to Sacramento March 25-29, and a day of action March 30.

There will be a meeting about the march Tuesday, January 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1187 Franklin Street (at Geary), San Francisco.

Kip Williams, an organizer with the group, told the Bay Area Reporter in an e-mail that the march isn't just about marriage equality.

"Marriage is an important and immediate goal, but achieving marriage does not mean that we have finally succeeded in the struggle for social justice and human rights," Williams wrote. "... Within the LGBT community, our sisters and brothers are affected by issues of racial prejudice, immigration, healthcare, poverty and homelessness, and gender discrimination. This march is for all of us."

Williams, a 26-year-old gay man, said that the group is looking for churches and community groups to act as hosts and provide dinner along the way.

In a phone interview, Williams said the group is looking at two or three different potential routes. Which route will be the fastest is one consideration, but another factor is which route will put them in touch with various communities on their trip.

The real reason for the trip, he noted, is "to connect with local communities between here and Sacramento."

And it sounds like they're serious about walking. Williams said that support vehicles will be used to take marchers to their starting point each morning, but most of the distance will be covered on foot.

Williams noted that people's belongings should be minimal. Items such as sleeping bags are encouraged, and people should be prepared to buy some of their own meals.
