Queer youth will have the opportunity to dress up, take pictures, and dance the night away at their very own prom at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center next weekend.

For one night – June 16 from 8 p.m. to midnight – the Rainbow Room at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center at 1800 Market Street will be turned into "A San Francisco Starry Night," the replica of an "Anytown USA" high school prom.

The Gay Mafia is scheduled to perform and DJ Chango Julius is spinning.

The prom is free to youths 24 and under with identification. The first 100 people to RSVP will receive a corsage.

Javier Rivera, 19, one of the organizers, is looking forward to bringing his boyfriend, June Phong, 18, to the event.

Rivera told the Bay Area Reporter that he went to his own high school prom with his best friend and had a "memorable experience," but he knows of people who didn't have a similar experience.

"They wanted to take their girlfriend or boyfriend and they couldn't because of people judging them how they look, who they are, who they talk to, who they like, or who they love," said Rivera.

The queer prom committee includes Nicole Ramirez-Monroe, 27, and Joe Lopez of the LGBT youth department, a division of the center's Children, Youth, and Families program; and Rivera, JR Rosemon, 20, and Damita Joe, 22, who are a part of the center's six-month youth internship, which is a new job training program. They plan to have all the traditional prom decor and a photographer present. Local businesses have donated food and funds for the prom and the center has received grants for the event, which will cost $7,000, according to Roberto Ordenana, director of community programs at the center.

"It's an opportunity to really give queer youth a chance to come, connect, and make friends and be able to really have an incredible experience that they may not have in their own schools," said Ordenana.

According to Rivera, about 75 young people have RSVPed so far; the Rainbow Room has capacity for up to 275 people. He expects that there will be more reservations as the prom nears.
