They've been doing it for five years in Washington, D.C. and in cities around the country, and Bob Mould and Richard Morel return with Blowoff, their DJ/live music night, at Slim's, Saturday, Nov. 29. For Richard Morel, who grew up outside of Boston, music has always been a part of his life. "As a kid I would get lost in radio; '70s and '80s rock, disco and pop," he said. "From there I would read underground and UK magazines to find new music. It was really a great time, musically. We were into everything and everything we were doing was cross-pollinating." Asked if he tried to figure out which musicians were gay when he was a teenager, Morel said, "I'd always look to the lyrics for something that related to my world. Sometimes that would be homo references, not only in music, but everywhere. When you're a teenager you want to find people who are on the same trip as you, so you can see where you need to be." The Death of the Paperboy, Morel's new two-disc CD, blends rock and dance music together; the second CD is dance mixes of his moody songs, which are accentuated by his deep baritone and layered production sound. Morel cites Paperboy as an "autobiographical CD." How did he manage that? "Sometimes an event that is happening in the present will trigger a memory or emotional response related to something that happened years ago," he said. "That was the starting point for a number of the songs on the record. While the narrative was about something that happened years ago, the emotional feelings were caused by very current life events." Since the early '90s, Morel has also been making hit dance remixes for Tina Turner, Depeche Mode, Madonna and many other musicians. He also co-wrote three songs on Cyndi Lauper's latest CD. "I've always been a fan of both disco and rock music," said Morel. "I never separated the two. It's natural for both genres to be part of what I do. When I'm doing a remix, I'm taking a rock or R&B song and making it a song for the disco. The union of these two genres is a big part of my everyday work as a musician. I think the overlap has always been there in music going back to the '60s. It doesn't make sense to dismiss a record because it's a dance record or to assume it has a higher relevance because it's an alternative record. All music is music. Some music is good and some music is bad. The genre shouldn't play into it."
Morel has twice toured the U.S. and Europe as part of Bob Mould's current band (the former Hüsker Dü and Sugar leader is also gay). "When we started doing Blowoff, we integrated a live set into the DJ sets," said Morel. "When we released the Blowoff CD in 2006, we also toured, DJing and playing live sets in the middle. At this point Blowoff is a DJ event. We've included video, which is mixed live to the music." Due to both musicians being out, and the sexy graphics, the event has grown a devoted gay following. "Blowoff has always been about the music and the guys who come to have fun with us," which Morel describes as "a mix of alternative rock, house, electro, and classics. That is the same today as when we began. The only difference is we're doing it in multiple cities."
