Hey, man. What does it mean to be a man? What is manliness and masculinity? See how local artists explore, question and address this concept.

Violence in the name of masculinity pales compared to sacrifice. See Fight Club and Donnie Darko in a double feature at the Castro Theatre. The two strange yet starkly truthful films about life's absurdity, and the delusions of some men, star Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Jake Gyllenhaal. Friday, Feb. 26. 7pm, 9:40pm. $8-$10. 429 Castro St. 621-6102. www.castrotheatre.com

Bay Area performance artist, poet, dancer, actor and activist Dazié Rustin Grego's solo poetry performance focuses on gay masculinity in I Am a Man at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory.

Dazié Rustin Grego

"Historically, we have been conditioned to define gender and sexuality norms from the viewpoint of the heterosexual community," Grego says. "But maleness exists regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity." His show "maintains a core identity based in manhood while bending the ideologies around what it actually means to be a man." $20. Thu-Sat 8pm. Feb. 25 thru March 6. 1519 Mission St. at 11th. (800) 838-3006. www.mcvf.org

Antonio Te Maioha as Barca in Spartacus: Blood and Sand

What if you're a big strapping man descended from warriors, paid to kill, but you also have a soft spot for a young male lover? Such is the case with Barca, "The Beast of Carthage," one of several extremely hot gladiators in the new Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

Antonio Te Maioha plays the role with a quiet strength. A few episodes into the much-discussed series, Te Maioha's character begins a clearly shown romantic relationship with slave boy Pietros (played by Eka Darville) at the story's gladiator school. In effect, Barca may be the first out gay gladiator character in film history.

For a special online-only interview with Antonio Te Maioha, go to "The Gay Gladiator".

For bar and nightclub events and listings, go to In the Bars.
