If you were lucky enough to squeeze into The Stud's last night of Trannyshack, you were a part of San Francisco drag history. If, more than a dozen years ago, you were lucky enough to squeeze into Martuni's when it was called Lily's and witness a performance by Justin Bond premiering his now quite popular Kiki & Herb act with Kenny Mellman, you were also a witness to drag history.

You can see Bond, along with Lady Miss Kier, Lady Bunny, Ana Matronic of Scissor Sisters, and a slew of the best local drag performers from Heklina's entourage, at the Trannyshack Kiss-Off Party, August 23 at the Regency Center.

Bond, talking from his apartment in New York, where he's since enjoyed greater fame than in little old San Francisco, said he's always happy to return to the Bay Area, especially when it's a paid gig. "It's fun to come back. I love it," he said, adding, "I would always book a trip to include Tuesday night to see Trannyshack."

Bond performed there a few times after moving to New York in 1994. "When I did Trannyshack the first few times, I wasn't Kiki, and I was happy to not be Kiki, for a change. I had recorded tracks and performed monologues and sang a little bit. I have no idea what I said, but it was wildly popular."

Also popular was Short Bus, John Cameron Mitchell's unusual and sexually daring film, in which Bond played the hostess of an unusual sex club. Upcoming projects include a new show called Luster which, Bond said, "celebrates everything trans. We did it in Manchester, and we'll hopefully come and do it in San Francisco. For each version, I'm pulling in genderqueer talent from the locals."

At the Trannyshack Kiss-Off event, Bond will be performing an original song, accompanied by Our Lady J. "I'm happy for Heklina," said Bond of the club night's 12 years. "It's really been a triumph, the fact that it's going out on a high note. I'm not the kind of person who mourns such things. It won't disappear, because the power of it. It provided a forum for so many performers to discover themselves as artists and as clowns and as freaks."

Bond added, "It also made a sense of community that'll stick, even though it won't be so cohesively centered on The Stud on Tuesdays. When those places go away, those queen spread out. It has a ripple effect; it is practically gonna be a tsunami!"

The Trannyshack Kiss Off Party is Aug. 23, 10 p.m. at the Regency Center, 1000 Sutter St., with performances by Justin Bond, Lady Bunny, Ana Matronic, Lady Miss Kier, The House of More, Kimo, Fauxnique, Raya Light, Kiddie, Hoku Mama Swamp, Putanesca, Precious Moments and MC Heklina. $35-$45. www.trannyshack.com
