In grass skirts and leis, in Stetsons and cowboy boots, two traditional dance forms get a modern edge this weekend.

Sundance Stompede's Hoedown 2007, the annual country-western dance weekend, celebrates its tenth year with a four-day big dance party, a silent auction, raffles, the 2008 Bare Chest Calendar Men, the Barbary Coast Cloggers, several other dance troupes, and country western line dance events and workshops Oct 18-21.

A welcome dance Friday Oct. 19 takes place at the Holiday Inn, 1500 Van Ness Ave, 7:30pm-1am. The Saturday Hoedown runs from 7:30pm-1am, at the Regency Ballroom, 1300 Van Ness Ave. The Pre-Stompede Dance is Thursday, Oct. 18, 6:30pm-11pm, and the Stompede Ball is Sunday, Oct. 21 5pm-11pm, both at the Sundance Saloon, 550 Barneveld St. Tickets for individual events range from $5-$40. A full pass to all events is $150. www.stompede.com

A bit further west, across the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is the home of hula dancing, a tradition that's centuries old. In O'ahu: Confessions of an Island at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu dance troupe performs hunky director Patrick Makuakane's (in photo, left) storytelling musical work about the history and culture of the Hawaiian island of O'ahu, with traditional hula dance, leaping souls, sacred sites, clandestine beaches, a surfing goddess, and a Hawaiian Princess.
