The Lambda Literary Foundation announced the finalists for this year's annual awards in numerous LGBTQ categories. Finalists were selected by judges comprised of 70 avid readers, critics, and literary professionals.
"We love all of our programs here at Lambda, from the annual Emerging Writers Retreat to Writers in Schools, which has reached over 12,000 students in New York City," said Director of Programs L. D. Lewis. "But the Awards hold a special place in our hearts because they are a joyous occasion to pause and to celebrate the growth and depth of queer literary voices. This feels particularly important at a moment when across the country our books have been banned and our stories have been weaponized."
The foundation received more than 1100 submissions. Awards will be offered in 26 categories with seven special prizes, including two that are new this year: The Denneny Award for Editorial Excellence, named in honor of Michael Denneny, who founded the first ever LGBTQ+ imprint at a major publishing house, and The Pat Holt Prize for Critical Arts Writing, in memory of the celebrated author and long-time SF Chronicle book review editor Patricia Holt.
Lambda Literary nurtures and advocates for LGBTQ writers, elevating the impact of their words to create community, preserve our legacies, and affirm the value of our stories and our lives. Our programs include the Lambda Literary Awards, the Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices, LGBTQ Writers in Schools, Learn with Lambda, and the Lambda Literary Review.
The 36th annual Lambda Award winners will be announced at a celebration to be held at Sony Hall in midtown Manhattan on June 11, 2024. Tickets start at $215 and are available at www.lambdaliterary.org. Even if you can't attend, the list of finalists, including many Bay Area authors and editors, makes for a great to-read list.
